A Service to commemorate the Irish recipients of the Victoria Cross in the First World War at the Presbyterian Assembly Buildings, Fisherwick Place, Belfast on 30th September 2018.
Over the past four years more than 40 Irish sailors, soldiers and airmen who were awarded the Victoria Cross have been commemorated across the island of Ireland. They have been specifically commemorated by the laying of VC stones commissioned by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. Often the stones have been laid at the recipient’s place of birth or a site especially associated with them. At Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin, a special memorial site has been built to house a complete set of the VC stones. The Northern Ireland First World War Centenary Committee felt that these especially gallant men deserved to be remembered in a dedicated service of commemoration.
